Democracy in Summerland cost $180,000

Council members received close to $151K, claimed $29K in expenses in 2023

Summerland’s democratic government had a cost in remuneration and expenses for the members of council

Summerland’s municipal government, consisting of a mayor and six councillors, cost the community $179,805.97 in 2023.

This amount includes the remuneration for the members of council as well as their expenses.

Mayor Doug Holmes was paid $38,896.02 for his role. He also claimed $10,955.13 in expenses.

Coun. Erin Trainer, Summerland’s deputy mayor, received $24,426.25 in remuneration and had expenses totalling $4,332.33.

Coun. Richard Barkwill, Coun. Doug Patan, Coun. Janet Peake and Coun. Marty Van Alphen each received $17,503.25, while Coun. Adrienne Betts received $17,530.61.

Councillors were also able to opt in to a municipal benefits package. Betts was the only councillor to do so.

Expenses for each of the council members varied, with Barkwill claiming $7,471.59 for the year and Patan claiming $80 for the year.

The figures were included in the municipality’s Statement of Financial Information. The document is required to be completed and published by local governments in British Columbia each year.

The figures in the document are for the year ending Dec. 31, 2023.
