Nearly 90 young athletes will take to the field this weekend for the annual David Forrest Memorial Tournament at High Street Ball Park in Ladysmith.
U9 Tadpole baseball teams from Ladysmith, Chemainus and Salt Spring Island will compete from June 6 to 8 in the spirit of friendly competition, sportsmanship and fun.
The tournament honours Forrest, a Ladysmith teen who died from meningococcal meningitis in 1993 at the age of 15, shortly after he returned home from a provincial basketball tournament. Forrest is remembered fondly by the community for his passion for baseball and exemplary sportsmanship.
David’s parents, Denny and Mary Forrest, are expected to be on site throughout the weekend.
Denny Forrest will throw the ceremonial first pitch to open the tournament. He will also select the team that best exemplifies sportsmanship and help present medals and the tournament trophy on the final day.
Game times are 4:30 to 7:45 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.
In addition to the ball games, attendees can enjoy 50-50 draws, raffles, a photo booth and a concession stand during the weekend.
Organizers encourage the community to come out and support the players in a weekend that keeps David Forrest’s spirit alive on the diamond he loved.
