Keaton Dowhaniuk, a veteran Western Hockey League defenceman, will be playing for the Vernon Vipers after being acquired in a trade.

After an 0-3-1-0 stretch to start the B.C.Hockey League regular season, the Vernon Vipers have made some roster moves.

The team announced the signing of Victoria Grizzlies defenceman Keaton Dowhaniuk, via trade. A native of Sherwood Park, Alta., the 20-year-old veteran has appeared in 228 games and 29 playoff appearances in the Western Hockey League, all with the Prince George Cougars.

“Keaton is a veteran defenceman with over 200 games of junior hockey experience,” said Vipers head coach Lukas Lomicky. “He’s a strong skater who sees the ice well, has a great ability to exit the puck from the defensive zone, and plays with an edge. He will be a key addition to stabilize our back end and fit seamlessly into our system.”

At 6-feet-tall and 163 pounds, the left-shot defenceman is "excited to get started and look forward to what this season holds."

The Grizzlies receive future considerations from the Vipers in the trade.

To make room for Dowhaniuk, the Snakes dealt defenceman Carson Lloyd to the Spruce Grove Saints, in exchange for future considerations.

Lloyd, just 18-years-old, has played in all four Vipers games this season, accumulating one assist.

The Vipers are in Salmon Arm Friday, Oct. 4 agains the Silverbacks.

The snakes take home ice at Kal Tire Place Saturday, Oct. 5 for a 6 p.m. faceoff against the Penticton Vees. All attending are encouraged to bring glow sticks!
