Soccer
The 2025 'A' Girls Soccer Provincial Championships took place from May 29-31 in Duncan, featuring both host school Duncan Christian School and Queen Margaret's School.
The Duncan Christian School Chargers pulled off a 1-0 win over the Immaculata Mustangs on May 29 in their first round robin game. It was a hard-fought battle with the game's lone goal coming from distance late in the game.
David Thompson got the better of DCS in their second round robin game, and DCS fell 3-2.
On May 30, however, DCS dominated Bulkley Valley Christian, scoring six goals and allowing zero.
Their round robin play earned them a spot in the final four, where they defeated Pacific Christian 1-0 to advance to the provincial final against an undefeated Southridge.
DCS finished with a 3-1 loss, earning them a provincial silver medal.
Meanwhile on May 29, QMS lost 2-1 to Vernon Christian to open their tournament but rallied to outperform Nakusp 6-0 in their second game of the day.
The following day in a big game that would determine the team's path for the remainder of the tournament, QMS was beaten by Credo Christian 3-0 in their final round-robin game. They went on to beat Nechako Valley 3-0 in their first elimination game to set the stage for their final game of the provincial tournament, a fight for ninth place against Fort Saint James. The QMS side stepped up and won 3-0 to claim ninth place in B.C.
Mountain biking
Queen Margaret's School sent a small but mighty team of four boys and two girls to the 2025 Mountain Biking Provincial Championships in Powell River, May 22-23.
The team was led by ninth-grader Hector Monro in the junior boys enduro division. Munro won the 2024 provincial championship and took the King of the Mountain award in the bantam division that year, too. This year, Monro overcame early mechanical difficulties to earn bronze.
Raymond Carr, the bantam runner-up last year, and Angus Preston joined Monro in the junior boys grouping. This year, Carr placed just off the podium, in a sixth place finish among a field of 133 competitors. Preston "rode with strength and determination" according to school officials.
In the senior boys enduro category, Charlie Cole (Grade 11) battled through a competitive field to place 43rd, ranking in the top third, while on the senior girls side, Maggie Preston (Grade 12) finished 18th, closely followed by Jordan He (Grade 12) in 25th position.
"This year’s provincials saw some top-tier competition in the enduro category,” said QMS coach Han He. “With only three relatively short stages, the margin for error was minimal. I’m incredibly proud of our riders for delivering such strong results."
The Cross-Country races took place the following day with He playing 19th in the senior girls division, and Maggie Preston following in 25th.
Angus Preston finished 27th in the junior boys grouping with Monro 32nd and Raymond Carr 71st in a crowded and competitive field. Cole placed 50th out of more than 150 participants in the senior boys cross-country race.
Tennis
The week of May 20, the Brentwood College School girls and boys tennis teams participated in the 'AA' Provincial Tennis Championships in Victoria. The boys placed fourth and the girls placed fifth. The Shawnigan Lake School girls team was also at the provincial tournament and placed sixth overall.
Badminton
Shawnigan Lake School was the lone Cowichan Valley school to participate in the badminton provincials this season, sending their girls team. The event was held May 29-31 in Richmond.
Shawnigan lost 5-2 to Pinetree to begin round robin play. They then lost to Elgin Park 4-23, and R.E. Mountain 5-2 to put them out of medal contention. In the Round of 16 Shawnigan lost 5-2 to Semiahmoo but got their first win in their last game, beating Sentinel 4-3.
