National Food Day is recognized on Oct. 24, and here is a photo of the shelves fully stocked for the grand opening of Vernon's newest grocery store in 1951, Canada Safeway, at the end of 30th Avenue (now FreshCo).

Excitement was big in downtown Vernon more than 70 years ago.

A brand new grocery store was fully stocked and ready to serve the public.

Located on Barnard Avenue (30th Avenue), Canada Safeway opened its doors to Vernon residents.

Safeway would serve Greater Vernon in that location for 68 years, before closing in the fall of 2019, and reopening in early 2020 as the newly branded FreshCo, which remains in business today.
