An interim president has been selected to guide Vancouver Island University during a transition period.
In a press release, VIU announced Dennis Johnson will serve as interim president and vice-chancellor for a term of up to two years beginning June 16. He takes over for Emily Huner, VIU chief financial officer and vice-president of administration, who served as acting president and vice-chancellor following the resignation of Deborah Saucier in April.
Johnson's resumé includes three decades of experience in post-secondary education, with work as president of College of New Caledonia in Prince George from 2019 to 2023 and most recently as a consultant for a number of institutions with work related to "finance and organizational improvement to projects."
He has also been provost and academic vice-president at Saskatchewan Polytechnic and an instructor at Mohawk College. He holds a PhD in educational administration from the University of Saskatchewan, a master of eduction in post-secondary studies from Memorial University and a bachelor of education in adult education from Brock University.
Johnson said he is taking on the positions at an important time.
"This interim period is an opportunity to strengthen VIU’s foundation and chart a stronger course” he said in the press release. “The next chapter starts with honest conversations across our campuses and evidence-informed actions. Together we can stabilize our budget, clarify our direction and build lasting confidence in the university’s future."
The university expressed gratitude to Huner for stepping in and added that the board looks forward to working with Johnson.
"The board is confident that [Dennis Johnson] will bring the steady leadership and clear focus needed to guide the institution forward. His experience and commitment to our students, faculty, staff and communities will ensure continuity while we prepare for the next phase of VIU’s journey,” said Jamie Cassels, chairperson of VIU’s board of governors, in the release.
