A student from Surrey is among three young people from B.C. recognized with a scholarship for raising awareness of organ donation.

Hiya Sharma, a Grade 11 student from Queen Elizabeth Secondary, has been selected as one of three recipients for a $1,500 scholarship from BC Transplant for her efforts to raise awareness about organ donation.

"When Hiya first learned about Green Shirt Day last year, she was inspired to take action," reads a release from BC Transplant.

"She organized an event at her school and also went into her community, setting up an information table at her temple during a major event.  She hopes to continue her campaign to show people they can make a difference and save lives through organ donation."

Sharma and the two other recipients – Navya Aggarwal of St. Thomas More Collegiate and Ella Yan of Moscrop Secondary School, both of Burnaby – will each be presented with their scholarship prize at their year-end ceremonies either by a transplant recipient or family members.
