The Thompson-Nicola Regional Library (TNRL) is painting the town red — and green, yellow, and all the other colours of the rainbow — this summer, via the popular Summer Reading Club.
The program is designed to have something for readers of all ages, and is available at all 13 of the TNRL’s branches — including the Aberdeen Tiny Library — as well as the Mobile Library. Registration for the eight-week program is now open, and all that children, teens, and adults need to do to get started is pick up a reading record from their local branch; you can also download the reading record by going to https://bit.ly/4n2mxee.
After that, simply get reading and track your progress. Reading a book certainly counts, but so does being read to, so even the very youngest readers can take part. Other ways of reading include listening to audiobooks, or reading e-books, graphic novels, newspapers, or magazines. Read whatever you want, whenever you want, for as long as you want: every bit of reading counts.
Participants can take part in weekly challenges: just drop by your local library to pick up an optional challenge bookmark, and be entered in a draw to win fun prizes. Submit your tracker to your library by Sept. 6, and you’ll be entered into the grand prize draw. Children who complete their entire reading log will earn extra grand prize entries, a completion medal, and a certificate.
The theme of this year’s Summer Reading Club is “Colour Your Summer,” with each week’s set of activities and challenges centred around a different colour theme:
• June 30–July 6: “Red Carpet”: Dive into music, film, and theatre
• July 7–13: “Outrageous Orange”: It rocks! Explore geology and everything rock-related
• July 14–20: “Yellow Brick Road”: Journey through fantasy and other worlds
• July 21–27: “Growing Green”: Discover biology and nature
• July 28–Aug. 3: “Ocean Blue”: Learn all about our vast oceans
• Aug. 4–10: “Indo-GO”: Planes, trains, and automobiles
• Aug. 11–17: “Ultra-violet”: Celebrate art and history
• Aug. 18–24: Summer Reading Club wrap-up parties!
The TNRL has also planned a full roster of summer programs at various libraries to enhance your Summer Reading Club experience, with each session focused on that week’s theme. For example, on Tuesday, July 8 the Barriere Library is holding an Outrageous Orange event at 1:30 p.m.; on Tuesday, July 15 you can head down the Yellow Brick Road in Cache Creek (11:15 a.m.) and Ashcroft (1:30 p.m.); and on Thursday, Aug. 14 everything will be Ultra-violet in Clinton at 1:45 p.m.
The Summer Reading Club makes reading fun and accessible for everyone. It’s been shown that children who read over the summer do better in school, and it’s a way for them to maintain the skills that they’ve learned in class. Librarians can help you select books and other materials that your child (and you!) can enjoy, and it’s completely free: all you need is a library card.
