Sooke starts two girls on the firefighting ladder with camp sponsorship

Island Ignite is a camp focused on introducing women and gender-diverse people to firefighting fundamentals

Not only is Sooke working overtime to prevent wildfires, but it's also raising the next generation of firefighters.

The district announced June 27, in partnership with the Sooke Firefighters Association, that they would sponsor two local students, Makenna and Kaia, who will attend the 2025 Island Ignite program this summer.

"Island Ignite is a dynamic, youth-focused camp that introduces young women and gender-diverse youth to the fundamentals of firefighting," said the district in a news release.

Program participants are mentored by female firefighters from across Vancouver Island, building confidence, teamwork, and hands-on fire service skills in a supportive and empowering environment.

“We’re incredibly excited to see Makenna and Kaia take part in this opportunity,” shares Fire Chief Wayne Kennedy.

“Programs like Island Ignite help strengthen future recruitment, expand diversity in fire service, and provide youth with life-changing experiences that build leadership and community connection.”

Sooke Mayor Maja Tait shared Kelly's enthusiasm.

"When we invest in our youth, we invest in the future of our community. I’m so proud to see Makenna and Kaia represent Sooke and explore their passions through this unique and empowering program,” says Tait.

As they began their firefighting journey, Makenna and Kaia visited Sooke Fire Rescue to tour the station and get fitted for gear ahead of the camp.

"Their excitement was matched by the pride of local firefighters, who look forward to cheering them on as they take this next bold step," said the district.
