Wildfires in the Shuswap are being held or under control with the exception of the Mara Mountain blaze near Sicamous.
In an update from Friday, July 26, BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) said the Mara fire is still out of control and is now mapped at 290 hectares, an increase from the 260 ha that had been maintained previously. It is, however, abutted by the 2021 burn that has limited fuel and is providing a buffer between the fire and nearby communities of Sicamous and Swansea Point.
"The wildfire has not crossed Sicamous Creek North, and the BCWS do not have any concerns outside of its small spread," Sicamous Fire Rescue said in a Facebook post.
Crews are continuing to respond and monitor the fire with aerial resources as it's still not accessible by ground.
In the South Shuswap, the Newsome Creek fire between Chase and Sorrento is now listed as being held at and remains at 1 hectare in size. The evacuation alert issued for 14 properties in the Elson Road and South Shore Place areas was lifted by the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) Saturday morning, July 27, after having been in place since the fire was discovered on July 23.
The CSRD is, however, reminding residents to continue to be aware of the situation as the fire is not out, with regular updates available on the BCWS website.
