On Nov. 30, a Tappen resident reported to Salmon Arm RCMP that his identity had been used to open accounts at various retail outlets.

Surrey police are investigating a Shuswap man's struggle with identity theft.

On Saturday, Nov. 30, Salmon Arm RCMP received a report from a Tappen man who said he'd been the victim of identity theft.

Over the past two weeks, someone had opened accounts in the victim's name at various retail outlets, and had also applied for four new credit cards in his name, said Const. Andrew Hodges in a media release.

"The transactions appeared to be occurring in Surrey… and included over $12,000 spent on several new cell phones," continued Hodges. "

The victim was provided information on how to protect himself going forward and, because the offences occurred in Surrey, Hodges said the information was shared with Surrey Police Service to investigate further.

To learn more about red flags to watch for in the most common types of scams, including identify theft, Hodges advised visiting websites for the following: BC RCMP Frauds and ScamsCanadian Anti-Fraud Centre, or the Competition Bureau.
