Okanagan-Similkameen residents will be receiving new waste and recycling carts next month.
The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) will be delivering the curbside collection carts throughout the month of June. Carts will be delivered to the curb or end of the driveway and residents can use them right away.
Each home will receive the standard-sized carts unless a change-out was requested previously. Standard sizes include 240 litres for both waste and recycling and 120 litres for garbage. Carts need to be rolled to the curb between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. on the morning of the scheduled collection date, with the front of the cart facing the road.
Residents can try the carts for two months to see if they work before requesting a $45 change-out for a different size.
RDOS suggested repurposing old garbage or recycling containers for storage or composting or donating them to a neighbour or local business. Old containers can still be used for unlimited yard waste collection days which will occur a minimum of four times per year in each Electoral Area.
RDOS stated that curbside collection costs have increased due to the new Waste Connections contract, which will be in effect on July 1.
