Police and bylaw officers from around the Lower Mainland took more than 80 commercial vehicles out of service during the three-day "International Roadcheck" event.
"Every year, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance schedules the International Roadcheck, a three-day event held across North America, where certified inspectors conduct compliance, enforcement and educational initiatives focused on commercial motor vehicle safety," read a Burnaby RCMP release about the event.
Checks were set up in Burnaby on May 13, New Westminster on May 14 and Surrey on May 15.
"During International Roadcheck, inspectors will primarily conduct the North American Standard Level I Inspection, a 37-step procedure that includes an examination of driver operating requirements and vehicle mechanical fitness. While all 37 steps will be completed, as usual, inspectors will also pay close attention to the driver’s record of duty status (RODS) and the vehicle’s tires," noted a post on CVSA.
The Lower Mainland Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (LMDCVE), which is made up of local police and bylaw officers, "dedicated to road safety," conducted 128 inspections, issued 195 tickets, placed 84 commercial vehicles out of service and identified 375 violations during the three-day event.
“Road safety affects everyone, and it is of immense importance for every community these agencies represent,” said Const. Kevin Connolly, Burnaby RCMP’s designated commercial vehicle inspector. “We will continue to ensure the safety of everyone on our roads by conducting regular checks like this throughout the year and throughout the Lower Mainland.”
The Lower Mainland Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (LMDCVE) consists of members from Burnaby RCMP, BC Highway Patrol, Coquitlam RCMP, Delta Police, New Westminster Police, Surrey Police Service, Integrated Road Safety Unit, City of Surrey Bylaw CVU, Township of Langley Bylaw CVU, City of Coquitlam Bylaw CVU, Vancouver Police and Metro Vancouver Transit Police.
