Oak Bay is set to welcome the public back to the Monterey Centre with a sizzling summer BBQ and live music on Aug. 20.
“Dinner will be served BBQ-style; guests will be called by table number to choose between a burger, smokie or veggie burger, and add their favourite condiments,” the district said on its website. “Enjoy ... performances by the Monterey Minstrels and Monterey Concert Band as you reconnect with friends and soak up the fun.”
The community hub closed for renovations on July 2. Slated to reopen on Aug. 5, crews are working to refurbish the reception area, paint a large portion of the interior, install new kitchen flooring and undertake "other necessary updates" within the 53-year-old space.
"As the facility continues to age, repairs and upgrades become necessary to ensure the spaces meet the service needs of patrons and staff," the district's manager of communications Hayley Goodgrove told the Oak Bay News in May. "The improvements will be noticeable and we anticipate much appreciated by our patrons."
The manager added that in the coming years, other work will be required to revamp the centre, most notably replacing its roof.
The Oak Bay Public Library and Oak Bay Volunteer Services remain open, and Monterey Centre members with an active social activity membership during the shutdown will receive an extension for the length of the closure.
Tickets to the BBQ, which runs 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the facility’s Garry Oak Room, go on sale Aug. 6 and cost $25 for members and $29 for non-members.
