The Crofton Fire Hall is gearing up for its annual fall recruitment of paid on-call firefighters. The hall is calling on residents with a strong sense of duty and a desire to give back to step up and serve their neighbourhoods.

North Cowichan’s paid on-call (POC) firefighters come from all walks of life but share a commitment to keeping their communities safe.

From their fire hall in Crofton, this arm of the North Cowichan Fire Department relies on dedicated teams of trained paid on-call firefighters to respond to a wide range of emergencies, from structure fires to medical calls, 24 hours a day.

In their call for Crofton Fire Hall applicants, North Cowichan Fire Services said, “This is a demanding role, but it’s one of the most rewarding ways to serve your community.”

It's no small undertaking, to be sure. Firefighters face physically and emotionally demanding situations that require staying calm under pressure and making split-second decisions. But for those well suited to the role, the rewards are immeasurable — camaraderie, confidence and the deep satisfaction of making a real difference.

To be eligible, applicants must be at least 19 years old, hold a valid Class 5 driver’s licence with a safe driving record and be in good physical condition. A medical assessment, criminal record check and vulnerable sector check are also required. Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status is mandatory.

Qualifications considered an asset include advanced licences, first aid certification, post-secondary education, fire-related training, and availability to respond to daytime calls.

Weekly training includes both theoretical and practical instruction. Firefighters also complete Emergency Medical Assistant First Responder training to assist BC Ambulance Service as needed.

Training sessions are held Wednesday evenings in Crofton.
