Regional grant-in-aid intake open

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) is now accepting applications for the fall 2024 Regional Grant-in-Aid program. Submissions can be made by non-profit organizations throughout the TNRD — in municipalities or electoral areas — until Sept. 1.

The program is meant to support cultural, recreational, and environmental programs and special events in TNRD communities that enhance the quality of life for residents. A total of $25,000 is available, and applicants can apply for up to $5,000. All applicants are reviewed for eligibility by the TNRD’s regional grants committee, with funding approved by the board of directors.

For more information about the TNRD’s Regional Grant-in-Aid program, go to tnrd.ca/grants.

From Aug. 13 to 16 there will be a Minecraft camp, giving participants a chance to bring the magic of Minecraft to the real world and build, create, and explore (this camp is currently full, but there is a wait list). The final camp, from Aug. 20 to 27, is Rainbow Art week, where kids can get messy with a week of art in all the colours of the rainbow.

Camps run from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, and the cost is $75 per kid per camp. For more information, email ashcrofthub@gmail.com; to register, go to https://bit.ly/3SCPNe2.

Walhachin Museum

The Walhachin Museum has reopened, and welcomes visitors Thursday through Monday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is by donation, with funds going to help keep the museum and community hall operating.

Savona Museum

Did you know that Savona has a museum? Located at 6640 Tingley Street, it’s open every Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. and has a fascinating collection and displays about the long and colourful history of the community.

It was originally known as Bout Du Lac by early French fur traders, and became known as Saveneux’s Ferry around 1859 when a Frenchman named Francois Saveneux built a ferry across the Thompson River at the west end of Kamloops Lake to facilitate travel to the gold fields.

Cache Creek market

The Cache Creek market takes place every Saturday through the summer from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. beside the Cache Creek Library. Community organizations can have a free table once a month for fundraising activities; for more information visit the Cache Creek Market Facebook page.

BC Wildfire Service app

Did you know that you can submit a photo of a fire if you’re making a report through the BC Wildfire Service app? If you’re reporting a fire, a photo can help operational staff determine the fuel type and terrain, fire behaviour and intensity (based on smoke colour and size), the type of access to the fire, current weather at the site, and more.

The app provides information about the current wildfire situation in B.C., info about individual fires (including evacuation orders and alerts), and much more. It is free to download for iPhone and Android products.
