RCMP investigators in Nanaimo are looking for a vehicle and its driver after it allegedly fled after striking a pedestrian.
The victim, a 65-year-old man, suffered non life-threatening but serious injuries when he was struck by a vehicle while crossing Departure Bay Road on the crosswalk at the Wingrove Street intersection shortly after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Police, Nanaimo Fire Rescue and B.C. Ambulance Service responded to the scene where the victim was treated before he was transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
“Officers were able to obtain CCTV camera footage from a nearby residence and with the debris at the scene, it appears that the vehicle involved is a dark-coloured SUV that was going southbound, did not stop after the collision and continued southbound on Departure Bay Road,” said reserve Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson.
The scene was closed to traffic for several hours while investigators collected evidence.
O’Brien said the SUV would have sustained damage to the front passenger-side corner of the vehicle.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dash cam footage or has information about the vehicle and driver is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP detachment non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and refer to file No. 2025-2158.
