With the school year officially wrapped up and summer in full swing, the Chilliwack RCMP is sharing an important road safety message.
"As kids head outdoors to enjoy their break, drivers can expect to see more young pedestrians and cyclists in neighbourhoods, parks, and on local streets," a June 27 press release from the Chilliwack RCMP stated. "Drivers need to slow down, stay focused, and watch for kids who may be excited and less aware of their surroundings."
"Our students have learned how to stay safe as pedestrians and cyclists. Now it’s up to all of us to help them put those lessons into practice," said Cpl. Cynthia Kershaw, a school liaison officer with the Chilliwack RCMP. Local school liaison officers spend the year building relationships with students and promoting traffic safety as part of their role.
They've offered up some bike safety tips for youth and families:
• Always wear a properly fitted helmet – it’s the law and saves lives.
• Ride on the right side of the road, in the same direction of traffic.
• Use hand signals to show turns and stops.
• Equip your bike with a bell and reflectors.
Pedestrian safety reminders:
• Cross at marked crosswalks or intersections, and always look both ways.
• Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the road.
• Put away phones and remove earbuds when crossing streets.
• Be extra cautious near driveways, alleys, and parked cars.
Driver safety reminders:
• Expect the unexpected – children can appear suddenly.
• Obey speed limits, especially in residential areas and near parks and playgrounds.
• Stay focused – avoid distractions like phones or loud music.
• Give cyclists at least 1 meter of space when passing.
"Summer should be a time of fun and freedom for our youth," said Insp. Kheleh, Chilliwack RCMP. "Let’s make sure it’s also a safe one. Whether you’re walking, biking, or driving – we all play a role in preventing injuries and saving lives."
