A month-long closure is coming to one of Oak Bay's community hubs.

The Monterey Recreation Centre, which offers a wide range of activities for adults of all ages looking to stay active, learn, socialize and engage with the community, will shutter its doors to the public on July 2.

Slated to reopen on Aug. 5, the district plans to fully inspect the building, renovate the reception area, paint a large portion of the interior, install new kitchen flooring and undertake "other necessary updates" in the 53-year-old space.

"As the facility continues to age, repairs and upgrades become necessary to ensure the spaces meet the service needs of patrons and staff," said the district's manager of communications Hayley Goodgrove. "The improvements will be noticeable and we anticipate much appreciated by our patrons."

The manager added that in the coming years, other work will be required to revamp the centre, most notably replacing its roof.

The Oak Bay Public Library and Oak Bay Volunteer Services will remain open.

Members with an active social activity membership at the time of the facility shutdown will receive an extension for the length of the closure.
