Lytton RCMP remind new drivers to display 'L' or 'N' tags on vehicle

Recent check stop uncovered numerous instances of learner and new drivers not displaying appropriate tags

Between Oct. 6 and Nov. 7, the Lillooet-Lytton RCMP responded to 226 calls for service.

Break and enter

Just after midnight on Oct. 8, Lillooet RCMP received a report of an alarm at Fort Berens Winery in Lillooet. Police attended and determined that a break-in had occurred. RCMP Forensic Identification Services attended later in the morning to examine the scene, and video surveillance files were also reviewed. The matter is still under investigation; anyone with information should call Lillooet RCMP at (250) 256-4244 and cite police file number 2024-2237.

On Oct. 10, a concerned caller requested that police check the wellness of a woman residing in Lytton. The caller had received reports from others that the woman was not looking good and was possibly being abused. RCMP members in Lytton attended the woman’s residence and spoke with her independently. She denied any physical abuse and said that she wished to remain where she was residing.

Theft of vehicle

At 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 10, a caller in Lillooet reported that his white 2001 Dodge Ram pick-up truck had been stolen sometime overnight. The vehicle was located later in the day by Ashcroft RCMP in a ditch near Ashcroft. The truck was unoccupied, and no one was nearby. The vehicle’s owner was notified, and a report was sent to ICBC about the damage caused to the truck. Check stop program

On Oct. 16, 2024 Lillooet RCMP members conducted a vehicle check stop on Main Street, checking for valid drivers’ licences, insurance, and driver sobriety. Multiple verbal warnings were given for minor infractions, such as failing to display "Learner" or "New Driver" tags. A reminder to learning and new drivers: “L” or “N” tags (as appropriate) must be displayed on the vehicle while you are driving.

On Oct. 19, a caller in Lytton reported a vehicle in a ditch on Highway 1 and said they were concerned for the occupant’s well-being. An RCMP member in Lytton located the sole occupant and driver, who told the member they were well, but had slid off the road on a wet spot on the highway and lost control. They told the member they had already called for a tow. No further police action was required.

Cows damage property

On Oct. 23, a caller in Lytton reported that cows were damaging her property, and expressed concerns that the owners were allowing their animals to run free. The RCMP livestock section was consulted, and reported that it was already engaged in the matter, which is still being looked into.

ATV collision

On Nov. 1, RCMP received a call to assist the BC Ambulance Service in Lytton with a single ATV collision on Spencer Road North in Lytton which resulted in injuries that saw one man taken to hospital. The ATV was not at the scene when police arrived, and the officers were told that someone had taken it; no name was provided, and bystanders had little information for police. There was insufficient evidence to determine who the operator of the ATV was, or to proceed with an investigation.
