Lantzville's public works department will be moving into buildings on Lantzville Road as council considers a more-long term solution.

According to the district, 7099 Lantzville Rd. will house the department until a temporary facility can be built on 7915 Clark Drive W., which is the proposed site for a long-term public works facility.

On June 11, council was informed that Lantzville's public works department has to pack up and move out of a Metro Road building before the end of the month, with senior staff telling council its current building is unsuitable and remaining there would leave the district legally liable and unable to respond to emergencies.

In a follow-up release from the district and a report to council, it was clarified that that while staff need to leave the current premises, that building isn't expected to be condemned, though the building inspector is investigating changes that may have been made to the interior of the building without permits.

Council began discussions about Clark Drive West during a meeting on Wednesday, June 25, ultimately deciding to defer voting on options for a temporary facility at the site.

According to a staff report, a number of locations were considered which were ultimately found to be unsuitable due to either location or cost. It was determined that the Clark Drive West site could be prepared for a modular office and storage in a reasonable time period with no impact to the budget, though no timelines were presented in the report.

Two modular constructions are being considered for that site. Site preparation is estimated to cost $170,000, including a 10-per cent contingency, but will benefit future land use at the site. Site preparation would include clearing vegetation, levelling, gravelling, grading, electrical work and more.

Option 1 is a smaller office unit with one washroom inside the trailer, with two rented sea cans for inventory storage. The negatives noted are that the "spacing is considerably tight for the number of current employees." Option 2, recommended by staff, is a larger office unit with two washrooms inside, and two rented sea cans.
