With the wildfire season upon us, the City of Langford has taken steps to protect the community.

The city’s revised and updated Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan was unanimously approved this month, bringing with it “a new generation of strategies” aimed at reducing wildfire risks in Langford.

These include maintaining a dedicated FireSmart and Wildfire Resiliency position, conducting FireSmart assessments of critical infrastructure and community assets, supporting firefighter training and advancing vegetation management in parks and green spaces.

"Langford is at risk from wildland interface fires,” said Chris Aubrey, fire chief and emergency program coordinator.

“The Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan will strengthen Langford into a resilient and FireSmart community, reducing the dangers of interface fires and keeping our residents safe.”

With the new plan in place, the city has directed Langford fire rescue staff to prioritize and implement its recommendations to reduce wildfire risk in Langford.

This includes the FireSmart program, which aims to raise community awareness and resilience against wildfires through ongoing education on wildfire mitigation for residents.

To learn how to increase a home’s resiliency to wildfire, the city is encouraging residents to book a free FireSmart Home Assessment by visiting: langford.ca/residents/public-health-and-safety/firesmart.

By developing a Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan, the city says it will continue to qualify for additional funding opportunities through the FireSmart Community Funding and Supports program for wildfire mitigation efforts.
