On June 21, the Desert Sands Community School (DSCS) Grade K–7 classes visited the Ashcroft Indian Band for National Indigenous Peoples Day.
At the beginning of the day, Desert Sands principal Kandi Lee Crooks-Smith gave a land acknowledgement, followed by some traditional Indigenous dances and a speech by dancer Tanisha Terry. It came before the Women's Warrior song, performed by the Helume Rams Drummers from Desert Sands.
After all this, students participated in a number of activities, including face-painting, bouncy castles, California kickball, marker-painting on wooden bear paws and feathers, cards with flowers and other plants, a craft from the E. Fry Society and a DSCS-themed craft, and finally an Ashcroft Indian Band craft.
Along with the activities, lunch was provided courtesy of the Ashcroft Indian Band. DSCS students had lots of fun on their trip and are thankful to the staff for making it amazing!
