Since it’s beginnings, whether the board of trade or the chamber of commerce, a driving mantra for the organization has been to to promote and improve the local business environment through advocacy, education and networking, and that is still the mission statement today.
When it comes to mandates the local chamber maintains a strong, but short, direction.
The stated mandates are 1. to enhance and advance the commercial, industrial, civic and general trade interests of the Ladysmith and its surrounding area; 2. to undertake an active leadership role in the community by initiating, coordinating, and developing programs for the benefit of the business community; 3. to encourage communication between private and public sectors, business and labour; 4. to be a representative of the business community and speak on behalf of the business community to municipal, provincial and federal governments.
When asked what goals the local Chamber of Commerce sees for 2025, executive director Roberta Bowman said they'd like to work on increased visibility in the community.
"Having the community as a whole see what we're doing. All of the accolades that we're receiving, all these the goals that we're reaching, and all the projects, they don’t just reflect on the Chamber they reflect on the community,” she said. “Our board has placed moving forward on a location in the train station as a major goal and we also want to have more workshops for businesses. Times are changing and we need to stay on top of it where possible and that will require bringing as much new information to our members, and the community, as we can.”
Starting off with that tone the Chamber will be hosting a business symposium, referred to as I.C.E.3 which stands for introduce, collaborate, engage. The Chamber’s website touts the event as, “A day of insightful workshops, expert-led discussions, and interactive networking opportunities, participants will gain valuable tools and strategies to harness the power of technology for their success. Whether you’re a small business owner looking to streamline operations, an educator exploring new tech solutions, or simply curious about the future of IT, this event is for you! Additionally, the symposium will address pressing issues like cybersecurity and business fraud, providing attendees with practical knowledge to safeguard their organizations in the digital age.”
Another goal the board has is to continue to have mixers, which are monthly gatherings where business folks can mingle and discuss ideas.
The chamber’s website states,“Mixers are an ideal opportunity to gain exposure for your business. As a host you will also benefit from a large, positive and business-oriented crowd."
Sometimes there are special events or speakers. A highlight of the chamber year is the annual fundraising golf tournament held at Cottonwood Golf Course. It's an opportunity for members and guests to let their hair down, enjoy a game, and then have a great meal and a lot of fun.
“As far as goals,” Bowman said, “is that we keep our members and the business community as up to date as possible, bring their concerns to the right place, keep the local businesses an integral part of the community and to do our best to make sure the community is prosperous. We are always encouraging new members as they benefit and the community benefits.”
