A driver is now facing multiple charges in the case of the motor vehicle incident that led to the death of 84-year-old former Abbotsford school trustee Phil Anderson.
The car crash, which took place on Feb. 3, 2024, involved two vehicles in the 31000 block of Old Yale Road, with Anderson suffering serious injuries that resulted in his death at the scene.
Now, 16 months later, 43-year-old Jaswinder Deol has been charged with three offences, including impaired operation causing death, operating a conveyance while impaired causing death, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.
Sgt. Paul Walker of the Abbotsford Police Department explained that the reason why charges are only being laid now is that cases like this involve a lot of different elements and often require more time before advancing to court proceedings.
"Major crime detectives worked in close collaboration with AbbyPD’s Traffic Enforcement Unit and ICARS to ensure the strongest possible evidence was presented to the BC Prosecution Service," Walker said.
"AbbyPD remains committed to identifying and removing impaired drivers from our roadways. Impaired driving has devastating impacts—not only for the families directly affected, but for the entire community."
Before his death, Anderson had served as an Abbotsford School Board trustee for eight years until 2022, with the Anderson family explaining that he possessed a deep devotion to the entire community.
"His sudden passing came as a profound shock, leaving a deep void not only in the hearts of his loved ones but also among his church family and colleagues at the Abbotsford School District," the Anderson family said.
"Phil embraced life fully, and even at 84, he continued to live with purpose and joy. We miss him dearly. During this incredibly difficult time, we are especially grateful for the support of the Abbotsford Police Department."
Deol is scheduled to appear in court on Jun. 23, where he will face these three charges.
These aren't the only vehicle-related charges that Deol has faced, with the 43-year-old previously getting charged with having liquor in a motor vehicle in 2018.
