The Black Press Media Hiring and Post-Secondary Education Expo is underway at the Country Club Centre in Nanaimo.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, the mall is hosting more than 45 exhibitors, local and B.C.-wide, looking to hire professionals for a wide range of jobs from information technology to law enforcement.

“We have over 100 careers available. Anything ranging from combat arms to technical trades to officer trades, even human resources and financial services,” said PO2 Brodie Burnell from the Canadian Armed Forces.

Burnell, along with other employers the News Bulletin spoke with, said despite the current status of the housing market and the pandemic, “applications are just coming in like crazy.”

“I believe that COVID did help [hiring] because a lot of people in the health-care sector moved into something a little less [intense], like a community support worker or working with adults with developmental disabilities,” said Jennifer Fowler, executive director of the Clay Tree Society in Nanaimo.

Dr. Elisabeth Crisci, medical director of Pacifica MD, a coming Qualicum Beach medical aesthetics office, said although the business focuses on experience and training when looking to hire, personality is just as important.

“If somebody has the right personality, we can give them the training they need,” said Crisci. “I think for people who are motivated to work and have a good employment, just give it a whirl because we’re looking for personality above everything else.”

The job fair is free to attend and job seekers are encouraged to bring a resumé.
