Following some unexpected delays, residents and business owners in downtown Red Deer can expect some sidewalk and parking closures as crews work to demolish the Empire Building.
The demolition, originally scheduled for June 27-30, is now scheduled to take place July 9-13, after crews discovered that one of the building's walls was unknowingly attached to an adjacent building. Remediation work is slated for July 7-8, followed by the demolition of the Empire Building, located at 4909 48 St.
Cleanup and site restoration will continue in the weeks that follow.
To ensure public safety during the work, on-street parking and sidewalks beside 4907 and 4909 48 St. will be closed from July 9-14. The south alleyway behind the building will be closed to through traffic from July 9-21, but access to nearby parking lots will remain open.
"We remind the public to stay clear of the site," states the City of Red Deer.
"The work zone will be fenced off and secured, and after-hours security will be in place. We understand construction can be disruptive and appreciate your patience as we complete this important work."
