A Sannich driver is prohibited from driving for 90 days after crashing their vehicle and refusing to provide a sample for an alcohol screening device.
On Sunday, April 6, at around 9 p.m., the Saanich Police Department responded to a report of a collision in the 3200 block of Richmond Road near the Camosun College Lansdowne campus.
When officers arrived, they discovered the vehicle had left the road and collided with a telephone pole and a tree.
The driver appeared to have minor injuries and was transported to hospital. While at the hospital, an officer suspected the driver was intoxicated and
demanded they provide a sample to an alcohol screening device, which the driver refused, resulting in their arrest.
They were later released with a future court date and face criminal charges related to impaired driving.
"For the driver to have only received minor injuries in such a significant crash is somewhat of a miracle. Our investigation shows they were travelling at a high rate of speed and were likely impaired. They are lucky to be alive and that they didn't seriously injure or kill someone else," said Staff Sgt. Doug Cripps of the SPD traffic safety unit in a news release.
The driver is now prohibited from driving for 90 days.
