The Downtown Victoria Business Association highlights a vibrant slate of low-cost events set to enliven downtown Victoria this summer, designed to spark a sense of belonging in the city core.

"Recent headlines about downtown Victoria have focused on challenges facing the city’s core, but there’s another story unfolding," the DVBA said in a news release. "This summer, grassroots organizations, artists, and community leaders are creating spaces for celebration, connection, and belonging."

National Indigenous Peoples Day Artisan Market and Block Party on Broad Street kicks off after the summer solstice, setting summer's tone. On June 21, Broad Street transforms into a celebration of Indigenous culture, featuring local artisans, music, dance, and storytelling from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On the same day and street, Robinson’s Outdoor Store celebrates 96 years with a huge sale.

A wide range of free and low-cost events follow suit this season, inviting Victorians to "experience the city's diversity and creativity firsthand", the DVBA said.

On June 27, the free Millie’s Lane Block Party, on "one of downtown’s most unique laneways," commemorates Canadian Multiculturalism Day with young talents from diverse cultural backgrounds. Perks include live music, free food for the first 80 attendees, speakers, vendors and local businesses throughout the evening.

"Hosted by the CREAN Society, this event uplifts the voices of vulnerable youth through art, performance, and community engagement," DVBA said.

On June 28, the Queer and Trans Farmers' Market returns to the Oaklands Community Centre, showcasing LGBTQIA2S+ vendors, growers, and makers from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Pride Month continues through June and into Pride week, running July 1 to 6. Culminating in the iconic Victoria Pride Parade and Pride in the Park on July 6, organized by the Victoria Pride Society, events throughout the city will celebrate gender, sexuality, and the relationship-diverse community.

Other summer highlights include the 26th Annual Ska & Reggae Festival from June 19-23, and the TD Victoria International JazzFest from June 21-30.

OUR DWNTWN continues programming at Ship Point offers free outdoor live music, food trucks, a beer garden, free fitness classes and more. The fun runs Tuesdays to Thursdays through Oct. 2, with live music from 4 to 8 p.m. The full schedule can be found at www.victoria.ca/media/file/ship-pont-schedule-junepdf

"Together, these events reflect the spirit of a city that values equity, celebration, and shared space," DVBA said in the press release.
