Cornish Mountain Wildfire experiences minimal growth overnight

The Cornish Mountain fire burns on as crews continue firefighting efforts

The Cornish Mountain Wildfire located five kilometres north of Jack of Clubs lake near Wells is still out of control. The BC Wildfire Service update says the fire "experienced minimal growth overnight."

The area around Wells was clear of smoke during the day Thursday, July 11, but smoke was visible in the distance.

The majority of the District of Wells is under evacuation alert, meaning residents should be prepared to evacuate on short notice if the fire spreads.

A portion of the area including mine sites and areas surrounding Eight Mile Lake, Nine Mile Lake and Cornish Lake were placed under evacuation order July 10 at 10 p.m.

BC Wildfire Service has 52 firefighters responding to the fire Friday, July 12.

They're using aircraft including helicopters and air tankers to try to get the fire controlled. They are also using heavy equipment to help control fuel sources in the area. Wildfire crews brought in fuel tanker trucks to help fuel the helicopters being used to fight the fires.

Barkerville continues to operate as normal, but is included in the alert area.
