The city and regional district are recruiting citizens to be part of this year’s Acting for Climate Together team.
ACT was was launched in early 2023 to inspire action to reduce the community’s climate impact and support volunteer climate action, according to a joint press release from the City of Nanaimo and the Regional District of Nanaimo.
Participants are encouraged to complete desired climate actions, connect with other groups and learn from their peers, city and RDN staff, and local climate experts. The initiative drew 16 teams last year that completed 26 actions to reduce emissions and protect the environment that included hosting an Earth Day event, neighbourhood tree planting, participating in GoByBike week and organizing a tour of energy efficient homes.
City and RDN staff recommend climate actions, but groups are also encouraged to develop their own projects and will be supported in those efforts by local government staff. There will be opportunities for connections with other program participants, plus potential access to project grant or seed funding.
Vanessa Craig, RDN chairperson, said participating in the ACT program was a great experience. City and RDN staff provided helpful information and the opportunity to make meaningful connections with people from all around the city working toward sustainability through collective climate action.
“Helping residents share ideas, access funding, and connect with others working on this challenge is an important part of protecting our vital lands and ecosystems and to managing the impacts of climate change in the region,” she said in the release.
People interested in joining can register at www.rdn.bc.ca and attend an online information session Thursday, Feb. 15, from 6-7 p.m. An in-person project kickoff meeting will happen in March.
