Career fair at Ashcroft HUB draws dozens of employers and jobseekers

Representatives from the Canadian Armed Forces were on hand at the Career and Education Fair put on by the Ashcroft WorkBC Employment Services Centre at the HUB on May 23.

More than two dozen employers took part in a Career and Education Fair in Ashcroft on May 23.

The event was sponsored by WorkBC in partnership with the Aboriginal Training and Employment Centre and the Ashcroft HUB, and welcomed jobseekers of all ages, including high school students from Desert Sands Community School.

Attendees were able to learn about myriad career opportunities, from BC Emergency Health Services, the RCMP, and BC Wildfire Service to local employers including IG Fibres and the Ashcroft Terminal. Representatives from the different organizations and businesses were on hand to answer questions.

Representatives from the WorkBC Centre in Ashcroft were also there to provide information about the many services that WorkBC offers, to employers and to those seeking work, further education, or financial or other assistance.

Staff at the Ashcroft office (located at 308 Railway Avenue) are able to assist people search for jobs, and can then help them with writing resumes and cover letters and preparing for job interviews. The office can also help people who have been offered a job but cannot afford to purchase specialized equipment — such as work boots or a hard hat — that they need in order to start work.

Those looking to return to education or upgrade their skills can find information about grants, scholarships, bursaries, and loans, as well as trades training and apprenticeship opportunities. There are also supports available for anyone facing work-related barriers due to a disability or functional limitation, including assistive devices, equipment, and technology, vehicle modifications for work-related purposes, and communication and hearing devices related to work.

The WorkBC Employment Services Centre in Ashcroft is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with the exception of Wednesday, when it is open from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information, drop by the office or call (250) 453-2499; you can also visit the website at https://www.workbccentre-ashcroft.ca/.
