Canada Day events throughout the region on July 1 promise fun for the whole family, with games, contests, live music, barbecues, and more.

Strawberry tea and bake sale

The Ashcroft/Cache Creek Seniors will be holding a strawberry tea and bake sale on Saturday, June 15 at the seniors’ centre (601 Bancroft Street, Ashcroft). Doors open at 12:30 p.m., and the bake table will be open for business right away; tea is served starting at 1 p.m., and there will be a door prize. The cost is $5 per person, and all are welcome to attend.

Clinton cowdog showdown

The BC Cattle Dog Series is coming to Clinton on June 15 and 16 with the Clinton Cowdog Challenge, which takes place at the Clinton rodeo grounds starting at 8:30 a.m. both days. The event is presented by the North Thompson Stockdog Association, and is CCDA- and MSSA-sanctioned. The event will include junior, novice, intermediate, nursery, and open classes on foot, and spectators from across Western Canada are expected.

Father’s Day fishing derby

The Clinton and District Outdoor Sportsmen Association will be holding their annual Father’s Day fishing derby at Kelly Lake on Sunday, June 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. No fishing licence is required, and all are welcome: you don’t have to be a father or even bring a father.

MP mobile office

Staff from the office of Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon MP Brad Vis will be bringing their mobile office to Cache Creek and Ashcroft on Tuesday, June 18. They will be at the Cache Creek village office from 10 a.m. to noon, and at the Ashcroft HUB from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. to assist anyone who needs help with federal government services.

Wire wrapping classes

Learn a new craft in 70 Mile at two wire wrapping sessions taking place on Wednesday, June 19 and Wednesday, June 26. Sessions start at 9 a.m., with two classes on June 19 (creating a Tree of Life and a copper ring) and two classes on June 26 (creating a bracelet and a wire-wrapped heart).

Classes are $40 each (or $150 for all four), and all materials are supplied (participants should bring their own tools). For more information, or to register, call (250) 644-6870.

Indigenous Day event: Clinton

High Bar First Nation will be holding a National Indigenous People’s Day event at Reg Conn Park in Clinton from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, June 21. There will be bannock, lunch, and refreshments; jingle dress dancers and hand drummers; and a live music performance by Arlen Park.

There will also be a market featuring vendor tables and Indigenous crafts, and vendors are encouraged to sign up now. For more information contact Cassidy Fletcher at services@hbfn.ca or call (250) 459-2117, ext. 106.

Community barbecue postponed

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Ashcroft community barbecue that was scheduled for Saturday, June 22 has had to be postponed. Watch this space for details of the new date.

Movable Feast

The St’uxwtèws Movable Feast is taking place at Historic Hat Creek Ranch on Saturday, June 22. The park opens at noon and the free, family-friendly event features a huge line-up of music, including DJ Shub, The Melawmen Collective, Bobby Garcia, and many more, as well as local artists, an artisan market, the St'uxwtèws dance group, and food vendors.

Clinton Community Forest AGM

The Clinton and District Community Forest is holding its AGM on Thursday, June 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Clinton Memorial Hall. All are invited to learn more about the community forest and congratulate the 2024 grant recipients, and refreshments will be provided.

Stuff a Stocking

Integris Credit Union in Clinton is wishing everyone a Merry Half-mas and inviting residents to a barbecue from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, June 28 at 1507 Highway 97N to kick off this year's "Stuff a Stocking" campaign. Bring an item to donate and be entered to win a prize; items are needed for men, women, kids (0 to 11 years), and youth aged 12 to 18.

Canada Day: Cache Creek/Ashcroft

Organizations in Cache Creek and Ashcroft that traditionally host Canada Day events in each community have decided to alternate Canada Day events moving forward: Cache Creek one year, Ashcroft the next.

This year's event will be a Canada Day Craze in Cache Creek on Monday, July 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cache Creek park on Quartz Road. The event will include barbecued hot dogs and refreshments, Canada Day cupcakes, yard games, a scavenger hunt, kids' activities, music, and a slip 'n' slide run by the Cache Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

Canada Day: Clinton

Clinton's Canada Day celebration will feature the always-popular talent show and the always-delicious pie baking contest. The talent show is open to everyone aged 5 to 15, and starts at 1 p.m. on July 1. Sign-up sheets are available at the Village of Clinton office and David Stoddart School.

The pie baking contest is open to anyone, and there must be at least six participants. The deadline for registering is June 28, and participants must bring their homemade pie to Reg Conn Park by 10:30 a.m. on July 1 to have it judged. Winner takes the blue ribbon and bragging rights.

Canada Day: Savona

Head to Savona for a beach barbecue on Monday, July 1 and celebrate Canada Day with good food and live music. Cake and coffee will also be provided, and there are games for the kids and for adults. The event is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and all are welcome to attend.

Canada Day: 70 Mile

You can celebrate Canada Day at the 70 Mile Community Hall, with festivities kicking off at 11 a.m. There will be barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs available by donation, a chili cook-off, a display of equipment and skills by members of the 70 Mile Volunteer Fire Department, and a variety of games for kids and adults, including a tug-of-war, a sack race, a three-legged race, and duck penning, with teams "mounted" on stick horses.

Cache Creek market

The Cache Creek market takes place every Saturday through the summer from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. beside the Cache Creek Library. Community organizations can have a free table once a month for fundraising activities; for more information visit the Cache Creek Market Facebook page.

HUB summer camps

There are eight weeks of summer camps coming up at the Ashcroft HUB starting the week of July 9, for kids aged 7 to 14. Each camp runs from Tuesday through Friday, and the cost is $75 per child for camp.

This year's camps will be Spirit Week; Around the World; Music Week; Zoology; Crazy Café; Minecraft Camp; Rainbow Week; and Carnival Camp, which winds up the season starting on Aug. 27. For more information contact the HUB (email office@ashcrofthub.com) or check out the Ashcroft Hub Facebook page.

Loon Lake photo contest

Summer is just around the corner, and that means the Loon Lake Community Recreational and Agricultural Society is back with its annual photo contest, which runs through Sept. 30. Photos can be taken at any time of the year, so if you got a great shot of the recent aurora display over Loon Lake, send it in!

Anyone can enter, including youth, but photos must be taken at or around Loon Lake. Individuals can submit up to three entries per person in total, in one (or more) of five categories: Active Outdoors, Lake Life, Wildlife, Landscape, and Loon Lake Pets. There will be prizes awarded in each category, and winning photos will be featured in the 2025 Loon Lake calendar, sales of which raise funds for the LLCRAS.
