The Campbell River Cricket Club is down a portable toilet after it was set on fire sometime last week.

"We don't think it was targeted," said club treasurer and player Aaron O'Shannessy. "We just think it was hooligans looking for some fun."

The club has no leads on who exactly set the toilet alight, as there is no footage available.

Playing at the Carihi Cricket Grounds, there are no cameras available, as the pitch is too far away from Carihi Secondary School, where the grounds are located.

Having no toilet leaves the club in a bit of a lurch. They were unavailable to provide adequate bathrooms for their game on June 7.

"The games go from 11 a.m. to about 7 at night, so you got 22 players out there, and they are peeing in the bush, and God knows what for the other functions," said O'Shannessy.

A new toilet is hopefully in the works, but O'Shannessy says they will be out of pocket for the one they lost and will have to pay for a replacement, which the business is reluctant to give due to what happened to the first one.

"We were kind of stuck in that situation where they wanted us to get insurance, which was almost as expensive as the rental itself."

O'Shannessy isn't sure if having an available bathroom is required by the Victoria and District Cricket League to host games but says that it was an obvious need.

"We just want to provide that for the players, especially people travelling out for games from Victoria. Not having a washroom is not acceptable, so we sort of just took it upon ourselves to do that."

He added that he had hoped the school would be able to help us out but understands that it might be a big ask due to security purposes. With the next home game coming up on June 21, the club is hoping to get it all sorted out.
