A total fire ban is now in effect in Cache Creek and Ashcroft until further notice.

No campfires

The villages of Cache Creek and Ashcroft have banned all fires — including campfires — within village limits until further notice. The ban also includes fireworks and torches of any kind, but does not restrict fires in stoves using gas, propane, or briquettes. Fires in portable wood burning fireplaces or in fire pits are not allowed.

Ashcroft community barbecue

Residents are invited to a celebration of rural life at its best from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 20 at the Ashcroft pool park. Bring your own lawn chair and come out for free burgers and hot dogs, juice, and water; there will also be bouncy castles for the kids, live music, free swimming for all at the pool from noon to 3 p.m., and more.

Community organizations are invited to set up a table (for free) to build community awareness about your group and possibly recruit some new members. To book a table, call (250) 453-9161.

Repair café

Volunteers from the 100 Mile Repair Café are coming to the 70 Mile Community Hall (2545 N. Bonaparte Road) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 20. The aim of the Repair Café is to reduce the waste that gets sent to landfill or incineration, and to change society’s “throw away” mind-set.

You can bring broken household items such as small kitchen appliances, small electronics (no cellphones or laptops), and small power tools and get them repaired (if possible) for free; you can also get advice or seek inspiration. For more information email 100milerepaircafe@gmail.com or visit the 100 Mile Repair Cafe Facebook page.

St’uxwtews Pow Wow volunteers wanted

The St’uxwtews Pow Wow is taking place at Historic Hat Creek Ranch from Aug. 9–11, and is looking for volunteers able to assist with parking control, security, janitorial work, Elder support, and at the gate. It will be a weekend of music, dance, and more, with an opportunity to learn more about the pow wow culture.

Baby party

Do you have a baby who was born in 2023? If so, they (along with parents and immediate family members) are invited to a Baby Party hosted by Ashcroft Early Years Provider on Sunday, Aug. 18 at the Ashcroft pool and park. There will be a swim from 4 to 5 p.m., and a picnic dinner from 5 to 6 p.m.

The free event is a chance to celebrate the babies born last year, and registrations must be received by Aug. 1 in order to prepare enough food and gifts. Let the organizer know you’re coming by commenting on, or messaging, Ashcroft Early Years Provider on Facebook.

Hospice Society new home

The Ashcroft and District Hospice Society has moved into its new home at 509 Railway Avenue (the Wellness studio) in Ashcroft. The office will be open on Mondays and Tuesdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in July and August. To make an appointment outside these office hours, call (778) 207-7575.

Clinton seeks beautiful gardens

The Clinton Communities in Bloom Beautification Society has six awards to present to deserving gardeners within the Village of Clinton who, despite the heat, have kept their gardens looking good for all to enjoy.

Be on the lookout for these gems, and if you see a glowing garden send the name (if you know it) and address of the location to Susan Swan (message her on Facebook or email sscountrysquire@gmail.com). The village is looking to present this year’s awards to people who have not won before, but don’t worry: send your suggestions, and organizers will check the addresses to see if they are past winners.

Report illegal dumping

Did you know that the Thompson-Nicola Regional District has an active back country clean-up program? In 2023 the TNRD cleaned up 14 illegally dumped and abandoned waste sites and supported six community clean-up events. The 14 sites that were cleared contained approximately 32 tonnes of waste, and many items found at the sites are free to dispose of at Eco-Depots and some Transfer Stations.

Reports from the public are crucial when it comes to addressing illegal dumping. You can report illegal dumping online to the TNRD at tnrd.ca/illegal-dump-sites. Please also report all illegal dumping to the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277, or #7277 on your cellphone.
