Lac La Hache wildfire now under control

Smoke is visible from as far as 103 Mile House

A wildland fire broke out on a property in Lac La Hache.

On May 1, around 12:20 p.m., the Lac La Hache Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) responded to a wildland fire. The fire department, according to Cariboo Regional District regional fire chief Roger Hollander, had observed a grass fire around 3/4 of a hectare in size with multiple trees on fire.

"The fire threatened nearby equipment and outbuildings located on the property," Hollander wrote in an e-mail to the 100 Mile Free Press.

It should also be noted that smoke from the fire had been observed as far away as 103 Mile House. The B.C. Wildfire Service had classified the fire as an out-of-control, 3.5-hectare fire located east of Neil Creek.

"Lac La Hache VFD actioned the fire and requested mutual aid assistance from 108 Mile VFD, 100 Mile Fire Rescue, and BC Wildfire crews," Hollander said. "The fire was extinguished after approximately five hours and was actioned by over thirty firefighters in total. No injuries or loss of structure were reported."

Hollander further adds that the cause of the fire is still being investigated. BC Wildfire said that the suspected cause was human.
