The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) has announced two burning projects at Nicomen and Skihist between Spences Bridge and Lytton, which will be ongoing between now and the end of November.
At Nicomen, BCWS crews will be working to burn approximately 10 to 20 piles along the Nicomen Forest Service Road (FSR). This pile burning project is taking place in an effort to clean up the excess fuels (e.g., dead wood or brush) made from chainsaw training and community protection in the area. It will also help clean up the right of way along the FSR where an excess of debris and fuel has built up from a previous wildfire during the 2021 season.
Smoke from piles may be visible to residents of Nicomen Indian Band and surrounding communities, and to travellers along Highway 1.
BCWS crews will also be conducting a pile burning project at Skihist Provincial Park near the Village of Lytton, where approximately 20 piles will be burned. This project is taking place in conjunction with danger tree falling and bucking, which will remove hazards to trail users and reduce the accumulations of fuels (e.g., dead wood or brush) around the Cariboo Waggon Road trail within the park.
Smoke from the pile-burning at Skihist may be visible to residents of the Village of Lytton, Lytton First Nations, the Gladwin and Nicomen Indian Bands, and surrounding communities, as well as travellers along Highway 1.
The pile burning at both sites will only proceed if conditions are favourable. BC Wildfire Service personnel will carefully prepare, control, and monitor these piles at all times.
