Ashcroft HUB getting ready to host eight kids' summer camps

Camps run four days a week through July and August, and there's something for everyone

Women’s meet-up

Looking to broaden your social circle, or find other women to attend functions or travel with? Then come on down to the Ashcroft Legion on Tuesdays (12:30 p.m. to ?) to meet with other mature women who are looking for like-minded people to do things with. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 3.

Ashcroft Legion bingo

Drop by the Ashcroft Legion on Brink Street for bingo on Wednesday, June 4. All are welcome: doors open at 5 p.m., and bingo gets underway at 6:30 p.m.

CADOSA meeting

Want to find out more about the Clinton and District Outdoor Sportsman Association (CADOSA)? All are welcome to attend their regular meetings, which take place on the first Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. in the basement of the Clinton Legion. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, June 4.

Softball tournament

Cache Creek Minor Fastball presents the first annual Desert Heat Classic Softball Tournament, featuring co-ed U11 and U13 teams, from June 6–8. There will be some great softball action, so get ready to come out and cheer on the players. More information is coming soon; watch this space, or go to cachecreekminorfastball.com.

Cache Creek drag races

Drag racing returns to the Campbell Hill drag strip near Cache Creek on Saturday and Sunday, June 7–8, with racing each day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. tech and registration for participants takes place on June 6). Entry is $10 for adults; children under 13 are free. There will be food available on-site. Can’t make this event? You’ll have another chance on the weekend of Sept. 12, when the drag races return in conjunction with this year’s Graffiti Days event.

Organizers are looking for a local non-profit group to host (and benefit from) a 50/50 draw at the event. Any group that is interested, or would like more information, can email bcdragit@gmail.com.

70 Mile pancake breakfast

Bring your appetite to a pancake breakfast at the 70 Mile Community Hall (2585 N. Bonaparte Road) on Saturday, June 7 from 9 to 11 a.m., which will feature door prizes in addition to a delicious by-donation breakfast. For more information contact Ken Huber at (250) 945-9914.

Strawberry Tea

The Ashcroft-Cache Creek Seniors will be holding their annual Strawberry Tea on Saturday, June 7 starting at noon at the seniors’ centre (601 Bancroft Street), and all are invited. Admission is $5 per person, and in addition to a delicious lunch of sandwiches, strawberry shortcake, and tea or coffee there will be a table stocked with homemade baked goods, a door prize, and a cash draw, with tickets on sale at the event.

Spences Bridge celebration

Head to the Bridge on Sunday, June 8 for a celebration of 160 years of the community! The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at historic Clemes Hall on Highway 8, and will feature arts and craft vendors, tea leaf reading, face painting, and a dramatic reading about the extraordinary Jessie Smith (aka Widow Smith of Spences Bridge), whose apples were a favourite of King Edward VII.

There will also be live music all day, from Jim Ryan, Sandra Hall, the Spences Bridge Ukulele Strummers, Flat Busted, and Jenny and the Gents. There will be a barbecue and salads (by donation), but admission to the event is free.

Community Resources Society AGM

The Ashcroft and Area Community Resources Society is holding its AGM on Monday, June 9 at noon at the Ashcroft HUB. Membership dues ($5 per person) are due at the meeting, and new members are always welcome.

Savona fundraiser

The Savona Community Association is holding a pub night fundraiser on Friday, June 13, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Savona Community Hall. Dinner is beef dip or pulled pork, and there will be music, games, a meat draw, and a cash bar selling beer, wine, coolers, and soft drinks.

Minors are welcome to attend, and the cost is $15 per meal. Tickets must be purchased in advance; go to www.SavonaCA.ca, call (250) 319-1809, or email SavonaCA2@gmail.com.

Kids’ summer camps

Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer are getting closer, and so are kids’ summer camps at the Ashcroft HUB. There are eight camps in all — Pirate, Superhero, A.R.T., Minecraft, Jurassic, Spy, Dance, and Krazy Café — with each one running for four days (Tuesday through Friday). The first one is Pirate Camp (July 8–11), and the final one is the always popular Krazy Café (Aug. 26–29).

The camps are for kids aged 7 to 12 (with the exception of Krazy Café, which is for those aged 10 and older). Camps run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, and the cost is $75 per child per camp. Desert Daze

The Best Little Fest in the West is returning to Spences Bridge on Sept. 5 and 6, and is now open for reservations from market vendors and food truck operators who would like to take part. It’s a great weekend of music, community, and fun, and the cost is only $100 for market/vendor space. And there’s a special offer that makes the deal even sweeter: if you have a talent that you can share with, or teach to, others during the festival, your booth is 50 per cent off!

Clinton junior sports program

The Clinton Minor Sports Association has started a junior sports program for kids aged 3 to 7, every Monday night from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The cost is $20 per family, and each session consists of a 30-minute introduction to sports, followed by 30 minutes of play time. Art at the library

Did you know that the Ashcroft and District Hospice Society has a free library of grief support resources for people of all ages? In addition to pamphlets and books, the society also has contact information for organizations that can provide even more resources and support.
