5 things to do, eat and drink in Surrey this weekend, June 14-15

The weekend weather forecast calls for mostly clear skies and temperatures around 18C — perfect for getting outdoors and doing your thing. 

Here are a five events happening in Surrey on June 14-15, officially the final weekend of spring:

1. 5X Fest Block Party at Surrey Civic Plaza: South Asian sounds and culture will be celebrated for a 20th year in Surrey and Vancouver during the annual 5X Fest, originally launched in 2004 as Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration (VIBC). Now in its 8th year as 5X, the festival brings June events to a few venues including Surrey Civic Plaza, where another free-admission Blockparty is planned Saturday as "the ultimate celebration of Panjabi music and culture." From 4 to 9 p.m., the concert will feature sets by Talwiinder, Gminxr and guests, G. Sidhu, Panjabi Hit Squad, Sahil Cheema, MTOORAY and hosts Parmvsthewrld and Neeti Sharma, along with food trucks, vendors, Corona Beer Garden (19+) and an Uber-sponsored VIP area ($100 a ticket).

2. Surrey Greek Food Festival at 96 Avenue and 132 Street: Greek food, music and dancing draws crowds to a festival set up in North Surrey for 10 days, ending Father's Day (Sunday), as an annual fundraiser for Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church. The festival's big draw is lamb, slow-roasted on spits, plus pork and chicken souvlaki ($25 for two skewers and four sides), calamari, spanakopita and more, noon to 10 p.m. on weekends.  

3. Movie Night in Fleetwood on Saturday: The local BIA's 7th annual movie night under the stars will feature Over the Hedge at Francis Park (15971 83rd Avenue), rain or shine. Bring your own blankets and chairs, and enjoy free popcorn. The movie starts at dusk, around 9:15 p.m. An animated heist comedy film, Over the Hedge follows RJ, a raccoon forced to deliver food to a bear named Vincent. Characters are voiced by Bruce Willis, Garry Shandling, Steve Carell, Wanda Sykes and other stars.

4. Classic Car Show & Fundraiser: Venvi Fleetwood Villa (16028 83 Ave.) hosts this event on Saturday morning/afternoon, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in support of the Surrey Food Bank. "Enjoy a spectacular display of classic cars, live entertainment, and a community BBQ." The live music schedule is 11:30 a.m. with The Beauty Shop Dolls, followed at 1 p.m. by Steve Elliot as Elvis.

5. International Picnic Day is reason to celebrate at Chimney Heights Park during a special event Saturday at dinnertime (June 14). Starting at 5:30 p.m., Surrey's parks department is hosting a two-hour gathering with music, games and more, at 14677 74 Ave., thanks to a grant from Participaction Community Challenge. "Come out for free samosas for the first 150 attendees, free lemonade from The Quenchy Lemon for 100 attendees, magic show and close-up magic with Travis Bernhardt and mini-golf," says a post on the city's website.
