Even with some of Commercial Street still under construction, the downtown core accommodated large and enthusiastic crowds for the first night market of the season.
The Commercial Street Night Market held its opening night Thursday, June 19, and will run for 11 weeks in total, with approximately 200 vendors registered over that time, plus more than a dozen food trucks, a range of entertainment, a kids' zone and more.
Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog asked market-goers to enjoy themselves and encouraged people to "open your wallets" and buy locally.
"Remember, this is good for the Canadian economy, this is good for local employment, every dollar you spend in your community is so much better spent than in some large chain store, no offence," he said.
The market goes Thursday nights from 5-9 p.m. through Aug. 28.
