Editor,
Letter writers Hugh and Patricia McMillan write to the Peace Arch News that they are "concerned about tariffs coming from the U.S. which will adversely affect our daily lives, particularly groceries."
I am not sure they understand how tariffs work. The tariffs Trump has brought in will affect U.S. consumers as prices on Canadian goods tariffed to them goes up.
By contrast the counter-tariffs Trudeau has imposed will increase the cost of most goods coming from the U.S. including many grocery items. In fact, both the Brookings Institute and University of Regina economics professor Jason Childs conclude our retaliatory tariffs will hurt Canadians significantly more than Trump's.
Just because Trump shot us in the arm doesn't mean we should shoot ourselves in the foot.
