A wildfire discovered on Wednesday (July 2) in Hope is out of control, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service map.
The blaze at Serpent's Back Trail, at the back of the Silver Creek Travel Centre, is 0.6 hectares in size as of 1:35 a.m. on Thursday (July 3).
"At 11:28 p.m. last night, Hope Fire responded to reports of a wildfire in the Silver Creek area," said the Hope Fire Department via social media."B.C. Wildfire Service supported our response and remained on scene until 4 a.m. this morning. A B.C. Wildfire unit crew will also support today and they have a medium bucket dropping water on the fire."
Ten B.C. Wildfire firefighters are currently on scene, assisting Hope firefighters. Air support is also active with helicopters conducting water bucketing operations since 8 a.m.
Both the District of Hope and the Hope Mountain Centre for Outdoor Learning are advising residents and visiting hikers to avoid the area.
Per the B.C. Wildfire Service website, an out-of-control wildfire means it is either spreading or anticipated to spread beyond the current perimeter or control line.
Coastal Fire Centre's last update suspected the fire was human-caused, but details aren't yet available on alerts or evacuations.
