Two young golfers from Surrey were among several junior athletes who performed admirably in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour US Performance Academy Series June 14-15 in Pitt Meadows.
Nearly 90 junior golfers from across B.C. and from as far away as New Taipei, Taiwan, competed at Golden Eagle Golf Club for the tournament, the second and final stop in the MJT series.
Several players lit up the leaderboard with red-hot rounds and standout under-par performances, showcasing the depth of talent across the field, an MJT release said, with a bear causing an unexpected pause in play during Round 1 with a surprise appearance on the fairway.
Outstanding rounds of 66-69 (135) were fired by Langley's Jackson Wang, who was the winner of the MJT Bantam Boys division with a fantastic 9-under-par total score for a 13-year-old, the release noted, with two phenomenal rounds of 69 and 67 (136) shot by Lilian Zhao of Port Moody, winner of MJT Girls 15–19, a brilliant 8-under-par total score by a 14-year-old.
Another exceptional performance leading to a division win was recorded by Surrey's Tiger Xie, 14, in the MJT Juvenile Boys division (73, 71=144), along with another Surrey golfer in the same division who placed second, Jonathan Mingze Xia, 15, who shot 72, 74 (146).
Surrey junior golfer James C.R. Qiu, 12, also came first in the MJT Peewee Boys (73-67=140) division, followed by Surrey's Minxing Matt Li, 12, who came in second with a 74, 72 (146) game.
The results mean Xie qualifies for the MJT East Coast Junior Championship as well as the national tour challenge.
