Raptor rescue, rehab efforts showcased at OWL open house in Delta

Eagle talks, release among highlights of June 7-8 event

An organization dedicated to the survival of raptors is to host its biggest annual fundraiser next weekend, with South Surrey's most notable eagle expert to be among highlights.

Set for June 7 and 8, this year's OWL (Orphaned Wildlife) Open House event is to feature talks led by David Hancock, founder of the Hancock Wildlife Foundation.

OWL, located at 3800 72 St. in Delta, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned birds of prey.

Hancock's talks are to be held in the the facility's school house.

Other highlights planned for the open house weekend include participation from various other organizations that support birds and animals; a 1 p.m. release of an eagle healed at OWL; and, opportunities to get up close with some of OWL's feathered charges.

Kids games, food trucks and a raffle fundraiser are also planned, and visitors are encouraged to also check out OWL's museum and gift shop, where hoodies, T-Shirts, jewelry, puzzles, owl mugs and sundry other items will be available for purchase. Owl stuffies, handcrafted by longtime volunteer June Young – a  White Rock senior – will be available by donation. (To donate yarn or wool for the stuffies project, email Young at bjuneyoung1@shaw.ca)

Parking is to be available by the Boundary Bay Airport north lot, with a complimentary wheelchair-accessible shuttle provided by OWL to transport visitors to and from the open house.

The event is not open to pets.
