Two people have been charged in connection with a dangerous driving incident in Williams Lake that happened on Wednesday, July 17.
Mounties say Mitchell Nicholas Jeff, 31, faces charges of intentionally causing damage by fire to property, dangerous operation of a vehicle, fail to stop for police, possession of stolen property and two counts of failure to comply with a release order, noted Cpl. Madonna Saunderson, North District Media Relations Cpl. Madonna Saunderson in a news release.
Chevy Camaro Louie, 20, has been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and two counts of fail to comply with a release order.
Saunderson said both men remain in custody and are expected to appear in court Thursday, July 18.
In an rare move, Williams Lake mayor and council have penned a letter to Crown counsel requesting bail be denied for Jeff, noting his actions put the community and property at risk. And, if he is released, they are asking Jeff be electronically monitored.
The charges stem from an early morning incident where RCMP responded to a report of a late 90's burgundy Chevrolet pickup driving at excessive speed on Western Avenue at 4:31 a.m. on Wednesday, July 17.
Shortly after, police patrols reportedly then identified the vehicle and driver on Mackenzie Avenue driving at speeds of over 100 km per hour.
At 5 a.m., at an unrelated traffic stop, police again spotted the vehicle on Third Avenue and reported it coming very close to the officer, who retreated to the safety of a police vehicle.
The same vehicle was then spotted again on Mackenzie Avenue and reportedly nearly struck a civilian and later attempted to ram two RCMP vehicles.
RCMP were then called to a vehicle fire on Moon Avenue at 6:18 a.m., where the same vehicle was on fire and the occupants had fled the scene on foot. Police located two suspects on foot and arrested them.
