There’s a new mural going up on the corner of Craig Street and Highway 19A in Parksville, and this one is a memorial to the late 'Flying Phil' St. Luke.
The image is being created by spray paint artist Dan Martens, otherwise known as Danopolis, with a reference photo provided by Alex Leeder.
Flying Phil Memorial Committee member Jennah Stavroff says the piece came together in the most natural way when they saw an old mural had been painted over and the space left feeling empty, according to a news release.
With a small amount of funds available they approached Martens and the building owner, Dizzy Vapes, who both gave it an enthusiastic thumbs-up.
The mural will be finished just in time for the annual Canada Day parade, which Stavroff says will be a bittersweet date as this will be the first year in decades that St. Luke's drum will not be in the parade that marches to the intersection.
