No More Stolen Sisters: Seabird Island observes Red Dress Day

Hundreds gather in Agassiz to march in solidarity

The Seabird Island (Sq'éwqel) community hosted a march Red Dress Day on Monday, May 5 in Agassiz.

Hundreds of people – most clad in red – marched along the streets of Agassiz in memory of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girl and two-spirit people across Canada.

This year marks the 15th annual observance of National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and 2SLGBTQIA+ People – also known as Red Dress Day. Métis artist Jamie Black is credited with creating the term Red Dress Day. Echoing Black's original 2010 art installation, red dresses can be hung from windows or trees in observance of Red Dress Day in addition to wearing red in solidarity.
