David Stoddart School news
Congratulations to David Stoddart student Lucy Willis, who was recently recognized by the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing for her achievement of placing in the top 25 per cent of contestants in the Pascal Contest. Willis earned a Certificate of Distinction for her achievement. The contest is open to Canadian Grade Nine students and is run by the University of Waterloo.
Students at DSS have made all sorts of creative projects in the past months, and they were happy to share many of their efforts with parents and families at a recent Share Our Story event that took place on Thursday, May 2 at the school.
The preschool class worked on tinfoil art, and in Mrs. Coxon’s room students learned about the life cycle of a chicken by raising chickens themselves. The senior Math class has been studying calculus, and high school students also made moccasins on a recent trip to Canoe Creek.
Students and parents at DSS will have the opportunity to order school supplies for the 2019/2020 school year through School Start this month. Order forms will be sent home with students in mid-May and will allow families to purchase supplies online or through the school. Supplies will then be delivered to a registered mailing address.
This month, students from Kindergarten to Grade Six will also get to choose 10 free books to take home for the summer holiday. A book fair will be set up for the week of May 21–24, and students will get to choose their 10 free books themselves.
Books will be ordered and handed out to students on the last day of school in June. As part of the program, DSS will collect Scholastic points for every book sold, and the program will then provide new books for the DSS library. Students can purchase books over and above their free 10 if they please, as they can during a regular school book fair.
Don’t forget: Friday, May 18 is a Professional Development Day and Monday, May 20 is the Victoria Day holiday, so students will enjoy a long weekend before the Book Fair begins for the week of May 21. Friday, May 24 is Pizza Day at the school.
Seniors’ Association updates
The next Clinton Seniors’ Association meeting will take place on Thursday, May 16 following a noon lunch at the Seniors’ Centre, 217 Smith Avenue. The Clinton Seniors are planning on entering a float into the annual parade this year and urge all local organizations to do the same, so that the 2019 parade will be better than ever.
Unfortunately for Clinton residents, the Foot Clinic will no longer be held in Clinton. For various reasons, Colleen Thom has had to terminate the service. She will still operate her clinic in Kamloops, and can be reached at (250) 819-1632 for appointments.
Village updates
The Village office saw a few staffing changes in April. Welcome to Clinton’s new full-time community development coordinator Angela Smith, part-time finance clerk Lily Barnett, and part-time receptionist Ingrid LeDrew.
At the April 10 regular meeting of council, councillors voted to reduce the business license fee for 2019 to $100. On April 10, council also voted to recommend the reinstallation of the telephone landline to the Memorial Hall, and it has now been reinstalled.
In mid-April, the Village received word that funding was awarded for the organization of Canada Day events in 2019. A grant of $1,876 was received through the Celebration and Commemoration Program and will go towards celebrations in Reg Conn Park.
At the April 24 regular meeting of council, the 2019–2023 Financial Plan (Bylaw No. 558) was read for the second time. The proposed budget will be read for a third time at the next regular meeting, on Wednesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. at the Village council chambers, which the public is welcome to attend.
