Merchant Madness a success, says Mayor Swan
On Friday, Dec. 7, the Village of Clinton participated in a revival of a well-known community event: Merchant, or “Midnight”, Madness. New mayor Susan Swan commented on how great it was to see a number of residents out and about in Clinton on Dec. 7.
“As a [previous] business owner, I was never able to get out and see what other businesses were doing for this event. I was always too busy with my own store.
“This year was different. I got to get out and enjoy the experience. Everywhere I went the stores were crowded with shoppers. It was great to see!”
Mayor Swan also noted the wonderful addition of this year’s CiB Christmas trees, part of the Adopt-a-Tree Initiative. The many uniquely decorated trees could be seen throughout the community on the night of Merchant Madness.
Mayor Swan observed that the trees’ decorations ranged from handmade “paper chains, paper stars and snowflakes at the Library” to “recycled and bird-friendly decorations on the Seniors’ Association and CiB trees in front of the Village Office”. There was even a Christmas tree decorated with chains, nails, and washers at the Clinton Building Centre.
Thanks again to everyone who participated in the various holiday events hosted by Clinton’s Communities in Bloom committee this year. As Mayor Swan said, “You [all] have helped bring some much-needed light to the dark days of winter.”
Congratulations to the CiB for all their hard work to enhance Clinton’s community spirit.
Christmas Light-up returns for the season
Clinton’s Communities in Bloom Chair, Yvette May, has invited the entire Village to participate in this year’s Christmas Light-up event.
“’Tis the season!” says May. “Hang a string of lights. Put up a tree, or two. Do some window artwork.”
Residents can get involved in a number of ways, from decorating at home to decorating in the community. However you choose to participate, May hopes everyone will enjoy the seventh annual Christmas Light-up event.
On Wednesday, Dec. 19 the winners of last year’s Christmas Light-up, Brenda Slade and Helen Prevost, will visit the downtown Clinton community to view the exterior lights and decorations. Judges will also tour homes south of town toward the rodeo grounds and north of town toward Mound Road. This year’s winners will then be announced online.
I encourage everyone to get involved if they can. The community already looks magnificent when you drive in at night, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year will bring. Well done, Clinton!
More Village news
The Village of Clinton has announced the dates of their Christmas office closure this year. The office will be closed from Dec. 24, 2018 through Jan. 1, 2019.
The upcoming 2019 council meeting schedule has also been released online, outlining the specific dates that Clinton’s new council will be meeting during the coming year; you can view the schedule at https://village.clinton.bc.ca/. A reminder that council meetings always take place on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. in council chambers, and that members of the public are welcome to attend. Questions from the public are taken at the start of each meeting.
Have you heard that the BC Government is bringing fibre-optic Internet to Clinton? It’s true: the British Columbia government will spend more than $300,000 to extend high-speed internet services to 327 homes and businesses in Clinton. Stay tuned as we find out details about when exactly this service will be available in town.
