Another successful Heritage Week—and May Ball weekend—has come and gone, but that only brings us closer to summer, and the sunshine we’ve all been looking forward to. As June approaches and we enter into the busy summer season, many exciting events are popping up within the community.

For those local event organizers, societies, and not-for-profits in Clinton who are seeking free event advertising, remember to reach out to me in advance with your event information. I will be happy to feature the details here for you in “The Rundown”.

Updates from David Stoddart School

On May 3, DSS students presented “Sharing Our Story”, a dinner and showcase event that allowed guests to dine on lasagna, salad, and garlic toast while enjoying the highlights of the school’s 2017/18 year. After the meal, guests shopped at the Young Entrepreneurs sale and browsed the students’ displays.

In other school updates, Kid’s Night continues every Thursday at 6 p.m. in the DSS gym, and the next PAC meeting will take place at the school on June 21 at 6:30 p.m. The PAC will continue to meet during the summer months, with July’s meeting scheduled for Thursday, July 19 at 6:30 p.m.. This year’s fall PAC auction is set to take place on Saturday, November 17.

Vintage cars will join the Plant and Yard Sale

The Saturday, June 2 Plant and Yard Sale—hosted by Clinton’s Health Care Auxiliary—will be combined with a second fundraising event, a Vintage Car Swap Meet. Funds raised at both events will be donated to the Clinton Food Bank.

The Plant and Yard Sale will take place at the Memorial Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include a bake sale, lunch concession, and a wide variety of plants for sale including tomatoes, peppers, sweet basil, cucumbers, and zucchini. A food truck will also be on site at the Vintage Car Swap Meet, which will occupy the 47 Mile Arena parking lot from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 2.

All tables for the sale have already been booked, so be sure to mark your calendars for a great day out in Clinton.

Spirit of Clinton highlights

The Spirit of Clinton committee hosted its monthly meeting on May 10 at the Clinton Memorial Hall. The new United Way community wellness manager, Krista Billy, attended the meeting and introduced herself to members of the committee. She highlighted her desire to form close connections within the community and to attend a number of Village events. Billy began her new position on April 3, and her services cover the communities of Ashcroft, Cache Creek, and Clinton.

Billy’s main objective in Clinton as community wellness manager is to connect residents with the services they need and to enhance community wellness following last summer’s wildfires. Currently, Billy is at work on a two-year action plan that will see her compile a database that seeks to identify the gaps in services for our area. In addition to her role as the community wellness manager, Billy also chairs the Ashcroft Mental Health Wellness Group.

A reminder that the Spirit of Clinton committee is always seeking new members, and would love to see more residents coming out to get involved in our meetings and events. Our committee helps to organize many significant events within Clinton, and also forms a space where the various sub-groups, societies, and clubs within the Village can get together to brainstorm and plan fun activities while also discussing valuable fundraising initiatives, grant opportunities, and ways in which we can all celebrate and cultivate local spirit.

Residents of all ages are encouraged to get involved with the SOC committee, as there are many levels of involvement with this volunteer organization, and everyone can help in some way, shape, or form. For more information about the SOC, feel free to contact me by email, or stop by one of our meetings.

Correction: In last week’s issue of “The Rundown”, the wrong mailing address was given for the Clinton Food Bank. The correct address is P.O. Box 309, Clinton, B.C. V0K 1K0.
